Growlers: Lost Forty Holiday Hangout, Flyway Flying Duck Party, 5 Brews 5 Bites Returns

Lost Forty Brewing kicks off the first week of December with a truly whimsical creation. Today’s Freshcut Monday (I’m only typing this once) is Peanut Butter and Banana S’morest Queen Milk Chocolate Stout. This Inception-style variation on a variation takes the S’morest Queen stout released two weeks ago and adds peanut butter and banana to the party. S’morest Queen is itself a riff on Forest Queen Milk Stout, made with marshmallows, graham crackers and cacao from Ouachita Chocolate. There’s a lot happening with this creative brew, but there’s not a lot of it; Lost Forty only made one half-barrel, so get there today at 4 p.m. if you want to try it. Then on Saturday, Lost Forty is again hosting Holiday Hangout Live from the Brewhouse, where musicians from White Water Tavern’s three-day Holiday Hangout event come to Lost Forty for an acoustic set. This year, Brent Best, Chris Clemmons and Shane Sweeney will perform. The event is free to the public. Doors open at 2 p.m. Saturday; performances start at 2:30 p.m.

Flyway Brewing also starts its beer week today with a special Angels on Tap event at Big Orange Midtown. Big Orange will tap Flyway’s Christmas Ale starting today at 11 a.m. and sell pints all day long. Every penny from sales of Flyway Christmas Ale will be go to purchasing the items on the wishlist of a family in need from the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. Christmas Ale was released a couple of weeks ago and is brewed with molasses, cinnamon, clove and allspice for a festive take on a winter warmer. You’ll want to get to Big Orange Midtown for this one today. Also this week, Flyway is celebrating the “first split” of duck season with a with a Flying Duck can party on Friday. The first split is the first weekend in duck season where no duck hunting is allowed. Flyway welcomes duck hunters to the taproom to have their calls tuned by RNT Calls owner John Stephens and enjoy some duck food specials and exclusive sticker packs. The party starts Friday at 4 p.m. and goes until closing.

Stone’s Throw Brewing is bringing back an old favorite event this week. Five Brews, Five Bites returns Wednesday at Stone’s Throw’s Stifft Station spot. Five Brews, Five Bites was a monthly event with The Southern Gourmasian for many years. It returns this week with Low Ivy Catering, one of the better food trucks in the state. The $60 dinner features five courses paired with Stone’s Throw beer, including smoked baby back ribs, lobster pot pie(!) and a blood orange cake. Tickets are available now; dinner starts Wednesday at 6:30. Then for #NewBrewFriday, Stone’s Throw MacPark will debut Gray IPA, which is a white IPA brewed with some black malts for a gray profile. This one is brewed with wild yeast cultivated by local homebrewer Sam Atcherson. Gray IPA will be released along with Urquhart Wee Heavy and Ripple Effect Rye Friday at 4 p.m. Better yet, get there at 5 p.m. to try these beers along with Stone’s Throw’s S’mores and Pours event featuring Shamus Stout marshmallows made by Loblolly Creamery.

There’s no 4:30 Thursday event this week for Rebel Kettle Brewing Company, which is probably still recovering after a huge Black Friday brunch event last week. The brewery released three beers Friday that still have a few four-packs left in the fridge: Dust and Diamond IPA, Maple Cupping Coffee Porter, and Mouthful of Cookies Imperial Stout. Stop by today to grab them; once they’re gone, that’s it for this year.

And finally, happy first birthday to Ox Bend Brewing in Ozark. The nanobrewery run by Karra Busch started life as Six Mile Brewery and changed its name a few months ago. It has become an immediate mainstay in the Ozark community, which is so important for small-town breweries. If you haven’t yet made it in, stop by next time you’re in West Arkansas and say hi.
