Zara's Monthly Dessert Specials Sweetly Celebrate Life

There are few people in the Little Rock food scene as generous with their time and talents as the recently-appointed Yellow Rocket Concepts pastry chef, Zara Abbasi Wilkerson. In the few years that I’ve known her, I’ve witnessed dozens of examples of selflessness on her part, often donating her abilities to brighten the lives of others. Since her appointment as pastry chef within Yellow Rocket, she’s determined to keep this going, hoping to reach as many people as possible with the assistance of the restaurants she’s now affiliated with.Zara plans to develop a new monthly dessert dedicated to a special person in Arkansas. She hopes to use her desserts as a way to commemorate this certain person and celebrate a life that deserves others’ attention. With the help of Yellow Rocket, she also hopes to help support various charitable efforts through a portion of dessert sales whenever possible.
April’s dessert special deserves mention not only because it’s particularly tasty, but also because it honors the life of a young person who deserves this special memorial. This month, Zara is whipping up her incredible “Cinnamon Roll Cake” and selling it at both Big Orange locations. It’s an absolutely delightful cake filled with cinnamon and spice, slathered in a sweet, decadent cream cheese icing. If you’ve ever enjoyed Zara’s cakes in the past, this one is a must-try. It’s certainly one of her best yet.
The cinnamon roll cake is named after and dedicated to Baby Freeman. Freeman was a beautiful young boy taken from his parent prematurely due to health complications. He would have celebrated his first birthday this month if he were still with us. In honor of his birthday and his short life, Zara’s cinnamon roll cake is dedicated to this young boy.
A portion of the proceeds from dessert sales will go towards a fund Freeman’s parents have established to help construct the Freeman Playground, a unique outdoor playground in Helena, Arkansas, which they hope to erect this summer. Mother, Misti Staley says, “Our hope is to provide an all-inclusive playground for children of all disabilities and abilities, and to also encourage parents and grandparents to play and be active alongside their children with outdoor elliptical machines and Expression Swings.” Donations to this cause may also be given through Thrive (thrivecenter.org), with contributions designated to The Freeman Fund.
Get on over to Big Orange and give Baby Freeman’s Birthday Cake a try. Your tongue and your heart will not regret the decision. And look for all of Zara’s monthly dessert specials at Yellow Rocket restaurants in the upcoming months. You can keep up with Zara’s desserts through her Facebook page.
