Rumbles: La Terraza Turns 2, Dempsey Barbecue Coming to Flyway, Three Sams Opening Delayed

All of us at Rock City Eats want to wish a happy second anniversary to La Terraza Rum and Lounge. Two years ago, Armando and Sarah Bolanos took over the space that once belonged to Acadia Restaurant in Hillcrest and turned it into a Venezuelan restaurant with Mediterranean influence and a stellar line-up of rum and rum cocktails. This Saturday, La Terraza will celebrate on the patio from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. with samples of a few of those rums, as well as some free food and music. After this event, the Bolanos will be busy running two restaurants, having purchased longtime Italian staple Graffiti’s last month. The couple says don’t expect many new changes at Graffiti’s until the beginning of 2018.
By the way, that anniversary celebration at La Terraza comes in the middle of Harvestfest, so you might have to park a little away and walk. Harvestfest will feature 13 food trucks on Kavanaugh Blvd., including Excaliburger, Loblolly, The Southern Gourmasian, Slader’s Alaskan Dumplings and more. In addition, the festival will hold a gumbo cook-off from 12 p.m. until 2 p.m. across the street from La Terraza. Entry is $5 and gets you free samples from The Capital Hotel, The Faded Rose, Rebel Kettle and other competitors. Harvestfest starts at 11 a.m. and goes until vendors break down around 9 p.m.
Mark October 29 on your calendars now. That’s the date renowned barbecue expert (and former Rock City contributor) Ken Dempsey will bring his talents to Flyway Brewing for a special menu. So far, Flyway has announced two special dishes to look out for: a brisket Frito pie and a spicy shrimp burger with avocado. Expect to see more dishes announced in the coming weeks. Dempsey was the executive chef at the now-closed E’s Bistro in North Little Rock before taking over food services for the Russellville School District.
Three Sams BBQ Joint will have to wait a bit longer to reopen the restaurant. Owner Annette Jones is still waiting for the city and state to finish final inspections before she can open up. In the meantime, Three Sams is still selling out of its concession trailer in the parking lot for lunch. Three Sams is finished rebuilding after a fire destroyed the establishment in March of last year. We’ll let you know as soon it can open again.
You’ll want to be on The Capital Hotel’s Facebook page tomorrow at 10 a.m. The hotel will be announcing all of its plans for Christmas and Thanksgiving events, including the wildly popular Storytime with Santa, as well as the Teddy Bear Tea and the putting up of the hotel’s Christmas tree. Tickets for events will also go on sale at that time as well, and at least a couple of those events will sell out quickly, so make sure you are ready to go tomorrow morning.
Speaking of sold out, there are no more tickets remaining for Monday’s No Kid Hungry dinner at South on Main. If you have tickets, we hope you enjoy what promises to be a great evening. If you were unable to get your tickets, we still encourage you to make a contribution to No Kid Hungry, which works to end child hunger in Arkansas and around the state.
The restaurant business always stays on the move, and that includes the people who work in the industry. We keep up with who goes where in our occasional Transitions series.
Fall is here! Promise! Well, when the weather does cool down, make sure you head to Trio’s to try the new cocktail menu. We previewed barman Merrick Fagan’s new drinks this week.
