Nothing stays a secret very long in Little Rock, especially when it involves a celebrity food personality. Multiple folks have let us know they’ve seen Guy Fieri out and about in Little Rock this week. We can confirm that Fieri is shooting for his uber-popular Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives in Central Arkansas; what we can’t tell you (yet) are the places he is shooting. However, from what we’ve heard the Food Network show should have some pretty good content to show off. We don’t yet know when the episodes are scheduled to air, but we will post it here as soon as we find out.
Saturday is the official grand opening of Kontiki African Restaurant in Little Rock. Kontiki shuttered its doors in Alexander last month in anticipation of the move, and this weekend will welcome guests in to its new spot at 3901 S. University; that’s in the same shopping center as Mr. Chen’s. Kontiki is the first African restaurant to come to Central Arkansas. Owner Christian Domingo and his family came to Little Rock from Sierra Leone at the beginning of the 21st century via the lottery program. He worked as a mechanic for 17 years before realizing his dream of serving his native food in Arkansas.
Labor Day is coming up Monday, and Loblolly Creamery wants you to spend the holiday at its South Main scoop shop. All day long on Labor Day, Loblolly will have its floats on sale for half price. Enjoy two scoops of ice cream with Loblolly’s housemade sodas, root beer, Fanta, Coca-Cola or even cold brew coffee. Loblolly will be open for normal business hours Labor Day. Then on Thursday, Loblolly will release its special Jet Fuel flavor for 2018 to benefit the Lymphomaniac Society of Little Rock, which helps provide relaxing getaways for cancer survivors and their families.
Delta Biscuit Company appears to be getting closer to its opening day. The soon-to-come food truck’s Facebook page has put out a call for places that might want to have the biscuit-centered business set up for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Owner Hayne Begley wants to have a solid list of locations ready before he opens later this fall. Delta Biscuit Company has been in the works for a couple of years, first as a restaurant concept and finally as a newly mined food truck. Delta Biscuit Company will sell plenty of traditional biscuit dishes like biscuits and gravy, egg sandwiches and the like. There will also be some more adventurous plates, like biscuit burgers and biscuit-based desserts.
Starting next week, Bernice Garden in the SoMa neighborhood will be home to a new kind of market. The Little Rock Night Market will be open on Friday, Sept. 7, from 5 until 9:30 p.m. This free event will feature restaurants, food trucks, chefs, craft makers, artists and other small businesses. There will also be plenty of live music. The night market is free to attend; of course, food, drink and other purchases will be up to you. So far, we know that Kontiki African Restaurant is going to be there, and the market’s website is promoting vegan food and Indian food vendors as well. The Little Rock Night Market is also planning on opening up in early October.
If you have never started an evening off at the bar at So Restaurant, you are truly missing out. We stopped by and found out there’s a completely different menu at the bar that is worth your time.
At Rock City Eats, we have praised the food at Flyway Brewing for years. This week, we stopped and visited with Flyway’s Georgina Jones Price, the chef who is keeping Flyway’s menu grounded in Southern soul.
