Rumbles: Crawfish at The Faded Rose, Proof Turns 1, New Happy Hour Deals

Yesterday’s Mardi Gras celebration means crawfish season has officially arrived at The Faded Rose. For decades now, the David family at The Faded Rose has used the annual celebration to kick off its weekly crawfish special, which will run through the spring. Each order gets a heaping pile of crawfish, plus potatoes and corn served in a traditional boil style. The half platter (1 pound) is $9.25, while the full platter (2 pounds) is $17.95. The next crawfish day at The Faded Rose is this coming Wednesday, and every Wednesday after, starting at 4 p.m.
This Sunday is the first anniversary celebration for Proof Bar and Lounge in Hillcrest. Gene Lee’s bar and restaurant took over the space that Next Bar and Bistro used to run and turned it into a successful shop that is typically bustling every night it’s open. The party starts Sunday at 11 a.m. when Delta Biscuit Company will set up shop outside Proof and serve brunch until 3 p.m., then again from 5 p.m. until close. Also, Rock Town Distillery will be unveiling a special new single-barrel whiskey for the event. Proof is planning some special giveaways, including a unique “challenge coin” related to the Rock Town whiskey release. Be sure to check out Proof’s Facebook page for details going forward.
Two Little Rock restaurants have started happy hour promotions in the past week or so that caught our eye. First, The Pizzeria in the Heights neighborhood is offering $4 draft beer and $5 well cocktails, as well as $20 for select bottles of wine during its happy hour. That event runs from 5 p.m. until 6 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 10 p.m. until close on Fridays and Saturdays. And in West Little Rock, Sauce(d) Bar and Oven is running its happy hour from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. every day except Saturday. Score select local draft brews for just $3 a glass (including Flyway Magdalene Tripel), $4 featured wines, $5 select cocktails and wings for 75 cents a piece. By the way, if you know of a happy hour around town that deserves some attention, let us know and we’ll work on getting it publicized.
We missed this last week, but West Little Rock restaurant The Happy Egg has closed its doors for good. In a statement on Facebook, the restaurant announced the closure and thanked its fans for their support for the past two years. The Happy Egg is the restaurant that used to be B-Side. It had undergone a name change and several renovations over the past couple of years.
This doesn’t really fall into the restaurant category that we try to stick to here, but The Joint Theater and Coffeehouse in Argenta tomorrow night is holding a special tribute that is close to our hearts at Rock City Eats. The Joint will honor Matt DeCample with a special improv and stand-up show at 8 p.m. Matt passed away Sunday after a three-year fight with liver cancer. He was 44. Matt was Governor Mike Beebe’s spokesman and a former KATV reporter as well as a lifelong theater enthusiast. He was a regular at improv night at The Joint. All of us at Rock City Eats knew Matt from earlier points in our careers and will remember him as a kind soul and a genuinely good person. Admission to the show tomorrow night is whatever you want to pay.
Want tacos for lunch today? We know a place. Check out our report of Taqueria Jalisco’z in our latest Underrated Places feature.
And after 60 years of business, Terri Lynn’s is still cranking out great diner classics for lunch. We stopped by to taste several of the plates that have kept this restaurant going.
