Casey’s Bar-B-Q, which is coming back in the former Arkansas Burger Company location, is hoping to hold its opening day next week. Managing partner David Henry says on Facebook construction teams had to move the restaurant’s smoker to the back of the restaurant, resulting in a rather large hole in the front of the building. The team decided to put in a walk-up window in that vacancy, which will be installed later this week. Henry says his crew is working in the meantime to make sure that everything else is ready so that Casey’s can open next week. Folks who have been around Little Rock for a while remember Casey’s Bar-B-Q from its former digs on Reservoir Rd. The restaurant closed in 2005, but is making its comeback after a 13-year hiatus.
Rebel Kettle is going to be home to quite a raucous, and delicious, weekend in a few days. On Saturday, the brewery is holding its second birthday party, which we previewed in this week’s Growlers section. I’ll sum up that preview by saying if you like beer, you need to be there. Then after the hangover wears off Sunday, Rebel Kettle is welcoming The Faded Rose to the beer garden for the 2nd Annual 6th Street Crawfish Boil. Zac David and his team will be boiling up thousands of crawfish beginning at 3 p.m. and going on into the evening. If you’ve ever had Wednesday crawfish on The Faded Rose’s patio, you know what a treat this is. If you haven’t, this is your chance. Prices for the boil have not yet been released.
Breakfast has officially come to E.J.’s Eats and Drinks in downtown Little Rock. E.J.’s new ownership is the same family that owns Old Mill Bread Company in West Little Rock, and you can expect to find plenty of Old Mill staples at EJ’s for breakfast. Think bacon cinnamon rolls, blueberry oatmeal muffins, cranberry walnut scones and more. E.J.’s seems to get that most people downtown are looking for something to grab and go, and so many of their pastries will be pre-packaged for a quick purchase. Still, the dining room is open for those who want to take their time. To further highlight their new breakfast menu, E.J.’s is partnering with Lost Forty Brewing on Saturday, April 15, for a tap takeover during brunch.
The International Greek Food Festival is back next month, but before that you’ll get the opportunity to learn how some of those addictive dishes are made. For the first time, the festival has partnered with Eggshells Kitchen Company for a special cooking class. The class is April 25 and features Eva Sargent, who has helped prepare food for the festival for decades. The tentative menu includes Greek meatball sausages, Greek coffee and oven-baked fries. Tickets are $50, and believe it or not some are still available.
Tacos 4 Life hits a big milestone in its expansion plans next week with the opening of its first location in Charlotte, N.C. Technically, it’s in the suburb community of Concord, where it will be the first of five planned locations in the Charlotte area. Tacos 4 Life has already opened a location in Frisco, Texas, and has another location planned for Nashville later this year.
And we’re sad to report that the Delta Biscuit brinner event at Honey Pies has been cancelled. We told you last week about the event, which was supposed to happen tomorrow night. Delta Biscuit is working on rescheduling the event, with an eye on a date in June.
The warmer weather is the perfect invitation for bartenders to break out their tiki drink recipes. Check out the new lineup at Big Orange, which features cocktails created by the individual bartenders.
Every now and then, we like to get out of town and explore Arkansas’ food heritage. We found plenty of that this week at Polar Freeze in Walnut Ridge.
