Rumbles: Soup Sunday, Ark. Food Hall of Fame Preview, Big Can Release for Flyway

Little Rock Soup Sunday, arguably the most popular winter food festival in Little Rock, is back this weekend. This is the 38th year for the event, which features soups and snacks from dozens of Little Rock restaurants. This year’s featured chef is Jeff Owen of Ciao Baci in Hillcrest. He’ll be creating a special recipe for the Patron Room, which is Soup Sunday’s version of VIP. The event is Sunday from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Statehouse Convention Center. Tickets to the event are $35 in advance and $40 at the door. Patron tickets, which get you complimentary beer and wine, are $60. Proceeds from Soup Sunday go to benefit Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families, which works to support children and families in leading healthy and productive lives.
Monday is the induction ceremony for the three newest members of the Arkansas Food Hall of Fame. The three inductees will be chosen from ten finalists at the event at the Ron Robinson Theater at 5:30 p.m. This is the third year for the ceremony, held by the Arkansas Department of Heritage. Finalists include Little Rock restaurants Star of India, Doe’s Eat Place and Bruno’s Little Italy. Doe’s and Bruno’s join Kream Kastle in Blytheville as the only restaurants to reach the final stage all three years. The Hall of Fame induction will also recognize the Proprietor of the Year, Food-Themed Event, People’s Choice, and a “Gone but not Forgotten” category. Tickets to the event are $20 and are on sale now.
This came out too late for our Monday Growlers feature, but Flyway Brewing on Friday is releasing a bourbon barrel-aged version of its Lord God Imperial Chocolate Stout in cans. This boozy stout is aged in bourbon barrels for ten months and rested on cacao nibs from Little Rock’s Izard Chocolate. The regular Lord God is already one of the best beer releases in Central Arkansas every year, and the fact that an ultra-rare BBA version is getting a canned release shows that Flyway’s capacity is growing. BBA Lord God is available in four-packs (limit one case per customer). Flyway is also tapping a small keg of Lord God aged on vanilla beans that will probably sell out very early. Flyway opens at 11 a.m. on Friday.
Cheers is expanding from Central Arkansas into Fayetteville. The same Cheers in the Heights and Cheers in Maumelle is opening a third location on East Center Street next month. The restaurant is going into the old post office building, which has been standing in Fayetteville for more than a hundred years. Expect a similar menu with a new addition: a wood-fired oven, similar to the one used at Samantha’s in downtown Little Rock (Cheers and Samantha’s are both owned by Chris Tanner).
Allsopp and Chappel are getting into the brunch game. The 300 block of Main Street is packed with restaurants, but Sunday Brunch is noticeably absent. Allsopp and Chappel will kick off their all you can eat brunch that will include prime rib, shrimp cocktail, eggs benedict, omelets, and waffles. The brunch will run from 11-2 and is $25 per person, with kids 12 and under free.
If you find yourself in East Arkansas, you really need to stop in at Tacker’s Shake Shack in Marion. In our latest Around Arkansas feature, we picked up lunch at Tacker’s as well as some outstanding desserts.
And we’re just weeks away from the 2019 Taste of Little Rock event. Here’s our preview of what you can expect from the UA Little Rock scholarship fundraiser.
